50th Celebration

 Schweitzer School

Celebrating our 50th Year of Excellence in Education

Schweitzer School was opened for the 1957-58 school year. This year, the school community will recognize our 50th year of educational excellence. The Schweitzer PTA has purchased the school a Memorial Bench that has been put in our south courtyard. The PTA is completing landscaping renovations in the courtyard as well. Martha Pitsenbarger, a WWCS Board Member and grandmother to two students at Schweitzer, donated many plants to kick off the landscaping project. More work will be done in the spring.

We have another exciting project being started this year. We are breaking ground for a new media center. This will include a new library as well as a new computer lab. We are very excited about this.

In 1961, Schweitzer students collected money in lieu of buying Christmas gift. The money that was collected was sent to the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Gabon, Africa. Forty–six years later Schweitzer students are once again collecting money in December and January that will be sent to the same hospital in Africa.

Mrs. Yvonne Cameron, our media clerk has gone to great lengths to find books about Albert Schweitzer. In December, she will be reading every class the story “The Boy Who Loved All Living Things”, a book about Albert Schweitzer as a young boy.

Albert Schweitzer’s birthday is January 14th. On that day, the school will be holding a celebration. Each class will be making a product to add to a time capsule that we hope will be opened 25 years from know (2032). Our PTA will be providing cupcakes & ice cream for the students (it wouldn’t be a birthday party without it!).

We have been hunting for information about our school. We learned from the Wayne Historical Museum that:

  • The school opened in 1957
  •  It cost $466,359.75 to build
  • It had 16 classrooms and 500 students
  • It was first located in Nankin Township.
  • Nankin Twnsp became Westland in 1966.

If you have any additional information to share, or if you where a former student who may have a fond memory of the school, please call the school at 734-419-2750, e-mail the principal at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it   or send us a note via U.S. mail. We’d love to hear from you. The school address is: Schweitzer Elementary School, 2601 Treadwell, Westland, and MI. 48186.
